Ace of Spades – The Review

Oliver —  January 24, 2013

Ace of Spades a game set around and based upon the popular game of minecraft, Some have described it as TF2 meets Minecraft. This is what I thought…

So a friend tells me to get the game…and this is how the forums state the game as…(with developers trying to keep up with whats going on.)

and this is the reaction when people ask whats going on, This was and still is a free to play game, The developers were acquired by Jagex and made a commercial release of the free game. The commercial version is still in beta but if you look on the steam store page there is nothing to say that it’s still in development, we all understand games go into after development but once again another studio tries to hide their games beta phase as a commercial release. I don’t blame the developers, I think personally this should be something steam could include in its stats page to show people it’s still in beta.

Multiplayer

The Gameplay is set around CTF, There was other modes but due to the amount of bugs that where and still present in the game the CTF mode was the only playable experience we got.

The game has 4 classes with different abilities and items, this is interesting to a certain point but considering the amount of effort it takes to customize the game means that your starring most of the time around the maps which are very nicely built. When it came to finding and playing the game the server browser is one of the worst i have used. The UI of the menus do not show up and your often click refresh to see who is online in a sub menu on your friends list. you cannot join a game via steam which is a shame really as this could ease the pain a little but ultimately the game keeps crashing and even when you exit the game your left with a crash reporter (I have also seen this bug still happening in newer versions.) and the loading screens took around 2-3 minutes, As a game this simply havent been optimized. I feel this game does have a huge potential but it’s lacking in quality control.

+Fast Paced

+Had Fun Parts

-Poorly Balanced Classes

-Works only when playing with friends.

- Why not QA test the game first?

Story

There is no background story to the release of the game, the only thing we knew was the history of this game was free until it was purchased and sold on steam recently…A good multiplayer game doesnt need a lore but this game fell short of greatness when it came to the overall story behind Ace of Spades.

-Lacking Lore

Graphics

The Graphics of this game are typical of a minecraft-like game. The only issue we felt was that each teams’ blocks showed up and the lack of building systems really put the game down.

+Minecraft-like Graphics

-poor Building Tools

Audio

The Audio for this game is the same sound track on the menu and loading screen. Its highly annoying and i was glad to find the audio off button. The Voice effects are cheesy.

-Bad Soundtrack on Menu

-Cheesy sound effects.

Bugs

There are loads of bugs in the game, most of them are showstopping and many people have found it hard to simply launch the game. Error reports show up often and in the end your wondering where was the QA testing.

-Lots of bugs

-Crashes alot

-Is still in beta but showing as a full release.

Overall

Most of the people at cavecast love this game, they said its a great 5 minute game to play when your bored and have nothing else to do. I personally feel it was released with major bugs and poor advertising and its something i personally regretted purchasing. The free version has less bugs overall and plays better than the current commerical release, We want to see publishers being honnest in there software descriptions and stating a beta is a beta insted of a commerical full release… Until this is stable we have decided to give this game an Overall score of 2/5

2/5
